Equipment Setup

Dark-sky observatories must meet certain criteria to be considered suitable for optical astronomical observation:

  • Minimum cloud cover
  • High transparency
  • Dark sky
  • Absence of radio and micro-wave radiation
  • Minimum optical turbulence
  • Location to avoid or minimize future deterioration due to light, radio, and atmospheric pollution.

A lot of ambient light and a bright sky, e.g. near cities, as well as trees or buildings obscuring the sky are usually not very suitable for good astrophotography.

In particular, light pollution or the local Bortle Scale value is a major problem in densely populated regions of the world, and filters for astrophotography can only compensate to a limited extent.

Therefore, it is advisable to choose dark environments with low ambient light, especially when photographing deep sky objects (DSO). To find these darker places, see the topic on light pollution maps.
