ZWO AM3

Connect the ZWO AM3 with ASIAIR via WiFi

updated: 2024-10-30

Important:

  • In addition to the connection between the ASIAIR and the ZWO AM3 via WiFi, this chapter also describes the integration of SkySafari
  • To connect the ASIAIR to the ZWO AM3/5 via WiFi, the hand controller must be connected to the AM3 mount, which provides the WiFi connection.
  • Please be advised that ZWO AM3 or ZWO AM5 mounts are not directly supported by SkySafari, which may result in certain limitations.
  • When using the ASIAIR in station mode, it is advisable to access the router's DHCP configuration and assign a reserved IP address to prevent the address from changing upon re-connection. Subsequently, the ASIAIR(s) can be labeled with their persistent IP addresses on each network. In the event of operating a field router in addition to the home router, multiple networks will require configuration.
  • Please be advised that SkySafari  will not work in station mode with your ASIAIR and ZWOAM3/5 connected via WiFi.
  • SkySafari integration only works in Access Mode with either ASIAIR or ZWO AM3/5 serving as DHCP server.
  • Nevertheless, it is possible to establish a WiFi connection between SkySafari and an AM3/5 mount, provided that the following conditions are met:

Method 1: using AM3/5 as Access Point

  • On your device with ASIAIR (and optional SkySafari) navigate to your device's WiFi settings and search for the provided WiFi network, typically named AMH_xxxxx (or Starlust_AM3 in my case, as I renamed the WiFi name of the ASIAIR).
  • Optional: SkySafari integration
    • Open SkySafari and goto settings > telescope > settings
    • Enter a new template
    • For the new template select Equatorial GoTo (German) and then Mead LX200 GPS/ACF, LX600 (uses the same syntax as the ZWO AM3/5)
    • Tap on Next
    • Enter the IP Address of the ZWO AM3/5 (in my case: 192.168.4.1) and the port number 4030
    • Test the connection
    • tap on Next
    • store the new template and leave the settings
    • The connection between SkySafari and the ZWO AM3/5 is now operational
    • In case you are using your mobile phone, the internet is still accessible using your mobile data connection (pay attention to the cost!)

Method 2: using ASIAIR as Access Point

  • On your device with ASIAIR (and optional SkySafari) app navigate to your device's WiFi settings and search for the provided WiFi network, typically named ASIAIRxxx (or Starlust in my case, as I renamed the WiFi name of the ASIAIR).
  • In the ASIAIR app open the Mount settings
    • select ZWO AM5/AM3 as mount
    • WiFi as connection method with TCP
    • and set the IP address to 10.0.0.x (in my case 10.0.0.41)
    • enable the mount connection
  • The mount and the ASIAIR are now connected.
  • Optional: SkySafari integration
    • Next open SkySafari and go to settings > telescope > settings
    • Enter a new template
    • For the new template select Equatorial GoTo (German) and then Mead LX200 GPS/ACF, LX600 (uses the same syntax as the ZWO AM3/5)
    • Tap on Next
    • Enter the IP Address of the ZWO AM3/5 (in my case: 10.0.0.41) and the port number 4030
    • Test the connection
    • tap on Next
    • store the new template and leave the settings (e.g. as ZWO AM3 via ASIAIR)
    • The connection between SkySafari and the ZWO AM3/5 is now operational
    • In case you are using your mobile phone, the internet is still accessible using your mobile data connection (pay attention to the cost!)
